NAVY PIER is a 3,000 foot long pier on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. Completed in 1916, the pier was originally
designated Municipal Pier #2. The Pier was constructed to accomodate package freight vessels, excursion steamers,
warehouses and public entertainment, and had its own streetcar.
During World War II, the U.S.NAVY began using the pier for training and in 1927, the pier was named Navy Pier in honor of
World War 1 veterans. Today, Navy Pier is home to many attractions, including a Children's Museum and the Smith Museum
of Stained Glass Windows. It also contains a seven-story, 525 seat Shakespere Treatre Complex, a Ferris Wheel and a
44-foot-high Musical Carousel. The Pier also serves as an embarcation point for Architecture Cruises and water taxis.
